And it certainly hasn’t soured our resolve to try and beat Hexagonest difficulty when we’re done.Cavanagh is cutting out a niche for himself creating games that look and sound like they were made in the early ‘80s, but using the latest 21st century technology. And together with the intrinsic randomness of the mazes it does often feel unfair.And yet despite our grousing it hasn’t stopped us from constantly stopping to play the game for ‘research’ while writing this review. The problem is the controls ensure the game’s never a joy to play – only to beat.

Technically that’s true but the controls are so unpleasantly sensitive that learning their foibles feels an unfair extra burden.This isn’t even a complaint about touchscreen technology since Super Hexagon is considerably smoother than the keyboard controls of the PC original. The game’s difficulty is not in itself a problem but since it’s set so high you need to be sure that it’s always your fault you died and never the game’s. It’s all a fiendishly clever design, whose simplicity has no bearing on how long it can hold your attention – as you refuse to let yourself be beaten by so apparently simple a game.Our problem with Super Hexagon though is the controls. Although having the sexy computer coo ‘Excellent!’ at you always seems a greater reward.Īs does the chance to listen to more of the superb 8-bit style music from the renowned Chipzel, with a soundtrack that is arguably even better than the one in VVVVVV. Even after considerable practise a single go can last just a couple of seconds, at which point a quick tap of the screen restarts you on your way, to an accompanying ‘Again!’ from the sexy computer voiceover.Last for 10 seconds and you complete a ‘line’, a component piece that sees your progress represented as an expanding polygon, from line to triangle and all the way up to the fabled hexagon. The only controls are virtual buttons to move left and right and the only thing the different playing fields do is speed things up and perform evil tricks such as blocking out one of the sides completely or transforming in shape.That’s even more unfair than it may sound because this is already a horrendously difficult game, far more so than even the Flash original. One of the hexagonal sides always have an exit though, so you have to rotate around, from left to right, making sure you slip through the gap each time.And that’s it. You control a tiny triangle trapped in the middle of a two-tone maze, where the walls constantly rush towards the centre.
That said Super Hexagon is an exceptionally simple game.
